We originally started in what was known as Passive Solar Architecture in the late 1970’s. We have been active in the Field of Energy Efficient Design which has evolved into what is known as Green Architecture and Building.
Green Building now encompasses many areas including Energy Efficient Design, Building Science, Renewable Energy Production, Sustainable Material Selection, and Water Conservation to name a few of its many facets.

Established in 1994, Terraplen provides a full range of Architecture, Planning, Design and Build services with specialties developed in Master Planning, Recreation and Park Design, Multi-unit Residential Developments, Light industrial and Commercial Design and Custom Residential Design. Mr. Monroe is owner of Terraplen, which was established with Architect Carl C. Ewing, a native of Santa Fe, now retired. Harvey has been associated with the firm 21 years and has a great deal of experience as the primary contact for work with the City of Santa Fe. He is completely familiar with the community, local regulatory and other State requirements. He is a member and Past-President of Santa Fe AIA and current member of Santa Fe Area Homebuilders Green Council who have collaborated with the City on their New Green Code.
Mr. Monroe worked with several design firms since coming to Santa Fe 40 years ago. Prior to joining Terraplen he was involved on his own projects, handling design as well as the construction of many projects. His design work has been noted for its regional character and solar orientation. Mr. Monroe is a licensed General Contractor in the State of New Mexico since 1980 and has provided peer review cost estimates and for constructability of the design for other architectural firms.
Mr. Monroe has been a project leader on many projects including the Santa Fe Southside Library, Santa Fe Trails bus maintenance facility, many multiple unit residential developments, Bicentennial Pool, Atalya Tennis Courts, Alto Street Tennis Courts, Salvador Perez Pool & Park, Fire Station No. 5 remodel and addition, City of Santa Fe Teen Center Program and Master Plan, City of Santa Fe, City wide Facilities Evaluation and Master Plan and several smaller projects for the City of Santa Fe. Mr. Monroe's projects have been the recipients of Green Builder Awards from the Home Builders Association for 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004. His responsibilities ranged from initial client meetings, programming, design, construction, documents, and contract administration.

Many of our projects are based on Existing Buildings. Affordable or Start Homes can be much more than just a simple shelter with four walls and a roof. We have planned , designed and built single homes as small as 800 sq.ft to 1600 sq.ft. All of these have qualified for the City of Santa Fe’s affordable status.
Office Buildings, Retail Shops, Galleries, Restaurants, Public shopping spaces and Town-homes and Apartment Buildings. We have experience in all of these from stand-alone new buildings to major renovations to interior tenant improvements. We have detalt in all of these and the design issues that are encountered.

The steps follow the documentation of the design process from programming, through the design steps, to bidding, project management and close-out.
